Join us in Mons, Brussels, Genk or Kortrijk on March 27th for the 4-locations Super Hackathon. Code, build, eat, drink & win.
Experts will be on site to help you with the last phase of building your first Windows 8 or Windows Phone 8 application. We’ll be streaming live everywhere to the world.

We come to your cities (4!), we bring the experts (many!), feed you with breakfast, pizza, coffee (lots!) and Red Bull, honor you with prizes and rewards (countless!). You are the center - we are there for you, because we want you to be successful.

One day – March 27th - four different locations.
All connected in a group or single. With designers or without. From scratch or working at a large scale app. Fast or faster. Veggie or not. End goal: Get to Windows Store, have fun doing it, go home with prizes.

Design reference templates
You can use a template fully created for the Windows 8 style & experience. Just by binding the relevant data, you should have a good looking app that runs in the paradigm of Windows 8. And the good news: the templates are available as Visual Studio 2012 project in both C#/XAML and HTML/JavaScript options. So pick your template and platform and build your app in a breeze.

The template addresses App Views (Landscape, Fill, Snap and Portrait), Live Tiles, Search & Share Contract, Settings, Navigation across pages, Bottom & Top App Bar (If applicable). So get started today and finish off the app together with us!

With the release of Windows Phone 8, Microsoft introduced a number of new features for developers to use in their apps. Aside from these new features, there have also been quite a few improvements to the platform such as resolutions and the inclusion of the Panorama, Pivot and LongListSelector controls in the ROM of the OS. In general, the Windows Phone app platform enables apps that target Windows Phone OS 7.1 to run without modification or recompilation on Windows Phone 8. But you may want to use some new features to differentiate your app from the others. You will find here a exhaustive list of modification App platform compatibility for Windows Phone.

They are multiple solution to approach this problem

Create a separate copy of the app for each version. Easy to do but difficult to maintain, you ll have to replicate every update that you make in two places
Create two copies of the app that share a class library of common code. Two projects in the same solution and refactor common code into a shared class library project. but the class library project must target Windows Phone OS 7.1. With this approach, your shared class library can’t use any of the enhancements or new features introduced in WP 8.
Create two copies of the app that share linked source code files. A same solution that share source code and use conditional compilation constants in your code to isolate app features that are new in Windows Phone 8

Independently of the method you choose, you can easily upgrade an existing Windows Phone app project that targets Windows Phone OS 7.1 to target Windows Phone 8 by

In Solution Explorer, use the Upgrade to Windows Phone 8.0 command.

In the project designer, change the Target Windows Phone OS Version value to Windows Phone OS 8.0.

You cannot upgrade XNA Game Studio 4.0 projects to Windows Phone 8. For more info, see XNA Framework and Windows Phone 8 development.

Tips :

Advertising SDK. Windows Phone SDK 7.1 installs version 5.2 of the Microsoft Advertising SDK assembly. Windows Phone SDK 8.0 installs version 6.1 of the same assembly in the same path for apps that target Windows Phone OS 7.1. As a result, you can’t build the project successfully with Windows Phone SDK 8.0 either before or after upgrading the project. You must Manually remove the reference to the older version and add a reference to the newer version of the SDK assembly

After the upgrade , don’t forget add references to your project for the assemblies that contain the new APIs, and import the namespaces into your code files and edit the manifest file, or run the Capability Validation test in the Windows Phone Store Test Kit. However the upgrade process automatically removes the deprecated ID_CAP_MEDIALIB capability and replaces it with the new ID_CAP_MEDIALIB_AUDIO, ID_CAP_MEDIALIB_VIDEO or ID_CAP_MEDIALIB_PHOTO capability as appropriate.

The word is out: on July 12 we’ll organize the first Summer App-a-thons, at the Belgian coast in Blankenberge. What could be more inspiring for building great Metro-style apps than the sound of waves crashing into the beach, ice cream and a beautiful sunset!

We’re building upon the success of the coding night at the Windows 8 Developer Day and have a hackathon to build cool Metro-style apps. So team up with your best UX or developer friend and form a killer app team or come alone or sign up with an entire group!

This seaside Summer App-a-thon promises to be a unique experience like N.O. O.T.H.E.R! Hands on. Code. Build. Shine. Totally Windows 8.

Yesterday, Microsoft announced previews of new Windows Azure services that help developers build applications that connect data to users across public and private clouds, take advantage of VHDs and deploy scalable websites quickly and cheaply.

Today, Scott Guthrie will host “Meet Windows Azure” to introduce these new services. And on Monday, as part of TechEd North America and broadcast live online, Scott, along with Mark Russinovich, Quentin Clark, and Bill Staples will host “Learn Windows Azure” to provide deeper demonstration of the latest Windows Azure features and services to build, deploy, and manage applications in the cloud.

Among the highlights of the announcements made yesterday:

Windows Azure Virtual Machines enable the moving of workloads on virtual hard disks (VHDs) between on-premises environments and the cloud. Windows Azure supports both Windows and Linux VHD images, which can be customized or chosen from a pre-populated gallery. With the commonly supported VHD format, developers and IT Pros can move existing workloads like a SQL Server database or an existing line-of-business application into Windows Azure to create greater scale, lower cost or deploy to new users. It has never been easier to move your applications to the cloud and boost them with virtually unlimited power, flexibility and reliability.

Windows Azure Virtual Network enables the creation, extension and management of virtual private networks into Windows Azure. Organizations can now more effectively and securely extend their corporate networks into the cloud. Did you ever wish you had an extra couple of servers for running a calculation job or to deal with a peak in user demand? Now you can seamlessly add and remove computing resources to your network, as your need them.

Windows Azure Web Sites makes building .NET, Node.js, Java and PHP web experiences easier and cheaper than ever while supporting deployment techniques like Git and FTP and framework applications like WordPress, Joomla!, DotNetNuke, Umbraco and Drupal that web developers already know and trust. Why should it be hard to setup a website that can scale with user demand, that is always up and running, regardless of the technology you’re using?

Python support, new Tools The new Windows Azure SDK (June 2012) includes updated support for Java, PHP and .NET and adds Python support, while providing 100% command line support for developers using a Windows PC or a Mac. Today’s the day. This afternoon we started requiring Windows Phone 7.5 on phones to download, buy, update, or review apps in Marketplace. These changes will make Windows Phone OS 7.5 the minimum OS required to install new or update existing apps from Marketplace via the phone or Web.

If you do get the error, all you need to do is install the free Windows Phone 7.5 update. Web Camps Belgium are free full day training events where you get to get your hands-on the technology and build something. If you are wondering how to take advantage of HTML5 and CSS3, use a free open source app like Umbraco, Orchard, Drupal, or others or simply want to program your own website, then this event is for you.

The morning section is presentation time while in the afternoon it’s time to get coding on HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, ASP.NET and web apps. You will be able to choose from a more basic to a more advanced tutorial depending on your interests. The trainer will be available the full afternoon to help you build your app.

Morning – Theory and demos
9:00 – 10:30	Web Platform Overview and open source Web Apps Get a good overview of the Microsoft Web Platform, free tooling like Visual Studio 2010, Web Developer Express, IIS web server and a peek at what’s coming in Visual Studio 11 and ASP.NET MVC 4. After the general introduction we’ll show you around Orchard CMS, Umbraco and other open source CMS apps using WebMatrix.
10:30 – 11:00	Coffee Break
11:00 – 12:30	Practical HTML5 This session kicks off with a good overview of the different elements in HTML5 that make up this umbrella term. We’ll go over standards HTML, new CSS3 specs and font usage and web app specs. Most importantly, the session will also address how you can start taking advantage of new features in the specs while still supporting older browsers through the use of polyfills and frameworks like Modernizr. To finish you’ll learn how to make your website shine on the Windows 7 taskbar through site pinning.

Afternoon – Hands-on labs
13:30 – 17:00	Hands-on labs The afternoon is hands-on, the perfect timing to apply the learning from the morning session. Labs include creating a website using a web app by leveraging, practical HTML5 and CSS3 labs addressing Canvas, WOFF, CSS3 layout features and more. At the end of the session you’ll have a good practical feeling on how to use and customize open source web apps as well as leveraging the best in HTML5 today.

Highlights:

Windows Azure SDK (November 2011)—Multiple updates to the Windows Azure Tools for Visual Studio 2010 that simplify development, deployment, and management on Windows Azure. The full Windows Azure SDK can be downloaded via the Web Platform installer here.
Windows Azure HPC Scheduler SDK— Works in conjunction with the Windows Azure SDK and includes modules and features to author high performance computing (HPC) applications that use large amounts of compute resources in parallel to complete work. The SDK is available here for download.

Ce lundi était la première journée de découverte et atelier robotique au Microsoft Innovation Center de Mons. L’objectif est de faire découvrir les possibilités de cette nouvelle discipline, dépoussiérer le métier d’automaticien et peut-être susciter de nouvelles vocations. Qui sait ?

Onze personnes venant de différents horizons, des passionnés, des développeurs, des curieux cogitent et réfléchissent sur certaines applications concrètes. C’est une première pour la majorité d’entre-eux et deux spécialistes sont présents pour les assister. Après une demi-journée de théorie et découverte des outils, l’après-midi était dédiées aux premières expérimentations.

Et surprise !, à 16h00 les premiers robots prennent vies. Voici quelques exemples..

Basé sur les Kit Legos Mindstorms, chacun explore les possibilités suivant sa propre expertise. Certains utilisent les outils natifs de Lego,

d’autres expérimentent les possibilités de Microsoft Robotic Developer Studio et développent leur propre logique en C#. Ici un Robot suiveur, capable de lancer des projectiles suite à certaines stimulations.

Et enfin, le dernier groupe travaille sur Nao et découvre les possibilités de cette nouvelle génération de robot.

J’ai hâte de revenir demain et découvrir leurs créations

Today we released the new Windows Azure Website with improved billing, management and SQL Azure capabilities. The site is in English today with localized versions planned to roll out next year

A highlight of the new features include:

Implementation of “Spending caps” where you can eliminate the risk of being charged by setting a €0 cap or reduce risk of large bills from unexpected usage by setting a higher cap and receiving alerts as they approach the cap.
SQL Azure database size increased from 50GB to 150GB and lowered prices
SQL Azure also has a new sharding feature along with SQL Azure Federation that enables you to build applications that are virtually unlimited in size
Open Source Experience with an updated Java SDK, a new SDK for Node.js that makes Windows Azure a first-class environment and new limited preview of Hadoop on Windows Azure
Simplified billing/reporting experience that integrates directly into the Management Portal
ISO 27001 complaint (public certification coming next month)

Developer content focus

The TechDays developer focus we have is make sure developers get a head-start on the platform and tools such as the next generation of Visual Studio Tools and Languages, ALM, Cloud, Web and Mobile as well as learning how to build applications that leverage cloud services and target multiple devices.
At the same time we also ensure there are enough sessions that go deep on current technology learning’s and real world architectures.

This year we are welcome some of the regulars as well as some new faces. Speakers like Jeff Prosise, Bart De Smet, Brian Keller, Wade Wegner, Tarek Madkour, Matt Milner and more. Alex Turner is also back after a few years away, as is Nikhil Kothari the creator of Script#. From over the English channel we are welcoming Steve Sanderson and Richard Finn for the first time, as is Rob Miles joining us for the second year.

This year the developer deep dive on “Web Development Futures” is delivered by Jurgen Postelmans and Peter Himschoot from U2U. Peter and Jurgen prepared a full day of sessions focusing on Visual Studio 11 for web development, ASP.NET (4.5) Web Forms, ASP.NET MVC 4, HTML5 and WCF. If you are looking at how to leverage new tooling for HTML5 and JavaScript development, target multiple devices, take advantage of new ASP.NET features you should not miss this deep dive.

Numeri’zik is a Belgian startup company that is involved in the digitization of media and new ways of communication. They are a member of the Microsoft BizSpark program, through which they have access to Microsoft software, support and a worldwide ecosystem of peers and partners.

Companies need to communicate to their employees about internal events, organizational changes, HR-related announcements, etc. Often email or other electronic communication is not appropriate and a more personal approach is needed. However, bringing all employees together in one physical location may not always be possible for different reasons.

Numeri’zik has built the Robot Stream application, which provides companies and institutions with an Enterprise Radio that gives them an innovative, fun and informal way to communicate with their employees. Through Robot Stream, you can integrate information messages in a music stream and target them at all or specific groups of employees, regardless of their location. Whether it’s in the coffee corner, during lunch in the cafeteria, on the PC or smartphone, you can reach anyone, anywhere in the organization.

With support from the Microsoft Innovation Center in Mons, Numeri’zik has developed the Robot Stream solution using Microsoft’s Cloud Computing platform. The streaming server is hosted in Windows Azure and which can communicate with an on-premise Robot Stream appliance (NumeriBox).

By leveraging Microsoft’s cloud computing platform, Numeri’zik can offer its customers a solution that is highly available without having to invest in and manage a server infrastructure. At the same time, as the number of Robot Stream users fluctuates the platform can flexibly scale up or down, optimizing the operational cost.

Back in September, Microsoft joined Nitobi to announce a Beta of PhoneGap support for Windows Phone Mango, and at the same time committed to continue working with the PhoneGap Open Source project community to help bring full support.

PhoneGap by Nitobi is an open source mobile framework that enables developers to build applications targeting multiple platforms, by using standard web technologies (HTML5, CSS and JavaScript). This release extends the cross-platform capabilities of PhoneGap, giving more choices to developers in need of a programming environment allowing them to easily deliver the same mobile experience to their users across the various existing and prominent mobile operating systems.

In addition to being able to leverage their HTML5 and Javascript skills to target Windows Phone, developers can now enjoy a selection of PhoneGap Plugins that support social networks and a solid integration into Visual Studio Express for Windows Phone. The plugins are:

Facebook JS SDK
Twitter/LinkedIn/WindowsLive status retriever
Bing Maps Launcher
LiveTile Update

If you missed TechDays 2012 in Belgium (Braine l’Alleud), there is no way to bring you back the whole 10th anniversary experience. That’s the bad news, the good news however is that we go a long way and bring you a recorded video of each of the sessions so you can learn from the best.

Microsoft recently announced the refreshed Windows Azure Toolkit for Windows 8 to make it easy for developers to create Windows Metro Style applications that can harness the power of Windows Azure. Nick Harris and Wade Wegner also recorded a video demonstration here.

A number of technology trends make toolkits like this one so valuable. The PC, the phone and an expanding number of smart devices have created diverse computing scenarios for millions of users and an unparalleled opportunity for developers. More consumers and business users have more devices and more device types, while each device keeps getting more powerful. These devices, combined with back-end cloud services, create opportunities for developers to build new applications that enhance and exploit each device.

Of course, one of the most talked about device experiences today is Windows8, which recently reached the Windows 8 Consumer Preview milestone. Many developers and enthusiasts in Belgium are downloading the preview and developers are eagerly building/testing new Metro Style apps experiences and sketching out how unique Windows 8 Metro Style apps can add to their portfolios.

2. MIC Call for Projects Windows 8 Metro Style Apps: still a few seats

A Microsoft Innovation Center Call for Projects is a streamlined process to call for ideas, give you training and support going from technical to Metro Design guidelines and UX. In addition, by participating in a Call for Projects you have a privileged access to App Clinics (testing on devices, discussion of the app) which leads to a selection of apps to go through App Excellence Labs later in June. The Excellence Labs are currently the only ticket for getting Windows Store tokens.

While the first info session has already been done end of March, there is still an opportunity to register. Make sure you register for each of the sessions separately in order to secure your full project call attendance.

Last week the Microsoft Windows Store blog announced an expansion of the Windows Store coming soon. By the next milestone of Windows 8, the preview release of Windows Store will include new markets and new languages.

Currently Windows Store includes five markets in Consumer Preview: France, Germany, India, Japan and the United States and China, as well as a “Rest of World” setting that all other regions get to see. By the next milestone Microsoft is adding 33 new developer submission locales, expanding the possible reach even more.

And there is good news for Belgian developers: in addition to being able to publish to the new markets, developers will also be able to target a Belgian market specifically.

2. Setup an Account:

Set up an account and obtain a free subscription for accessing the online portals for Windows Azure, SQL Azure and Windows Azure AppFabric. You can learn more about the accounts http://tinyurl.com/getazureaccount or you can sign up directly and get the trial http://tinyurl.com/getazurefreetrial.

3. Create your First application and Deploy it on the Windows Azure Platform:

The toolkit contains the following resources:

Cette session est co-organisée par DotNetHub et par le CLUG !

Implémentée dans la plupart des langages de programmations, la programmation orientée aspect (AOP ou POA) permet de produire la même fonctionnalité avec un code plus concis et plus lisible. Une aubaine, si l’on compte que chaque ligne de code peut cacher un défaut, et qu’un développeur d’une application en phase de maintenance passe en moyenne 75% de son temps à lire du code.

L’approche de la POA : encapsuler les patterns d’implémentation les plus courants (traçage, gestion des exceptions, audit, ...) dans des classes dites aspects, que l’on peut appliquer aux processus métiers sans en altérer le code source. Et la prochaine fois qu’il faudra changer la politique d’audit, vous n’aurez qu’à changer une seule classe.

Gaël Fraiteur, expert reconnu dans le monde de l'AOP et créateur du framework PostSharp, nous expliquera les fondamentaux de la programmation orientée aspect, et comment cette technique de programmation peut nous aider à écrire des applications plus propres, plus maintenables, et avec moins de code.

Ce 12 avril était une journée de folie a Las Vegas. Juste un parenthèse pour définir Las Vegas – Vous avez plus de 21 ans , vous aimez faire la fête, vous rêvez de faire un truc dingue comme conduire une Lamborghini ou une Nascar, tirer avec un AK47, voler en avion de chasse, vivre comme une superstar du showbiz pdt 24h. Tout est possible.

Mix se passe au Mandalay Bay, complexe gigantesque de 4 hôtels interconnectés, Le Mandalay, TheHotel, le Luxor et l"’Excalibur avec superficie équivalente au centre d’un village du BW. Une idée, il faut plus 25 min a pied pour tout traverser

Enfin, le contenu, ce 12 Mai était consacré au WEB – HTML5, une preview de IE10, intégration forte avec Orchard et Umbraco. L’avenir sur le WEB s’annonce très excitant. Vous voulez des exemples – Essayez ceci..

VEGAS — April 12, 2011 — Just four weeks after the release of Internet Explorer 9, Microsoft Corp. unveiled the first platform preview of Internet Explorer 10 at MIX11. In his keynote, Dean Hachamovitch, corporate vice president of Internet Explorer, outlined how the next version of Microsoft’s industry-leading Web browser builds on the performance breakthroughs and the deep native HTML5 support delivered in Internet Explorer 9. With this investment, Microsoft is leading the adoption of HTML5 with a long-term commitment to the standards process.

“The only native experience of HTML5 on the Web today is on Windows 7 with Internet Explorer 9,” Hachamovitch said. “With Internet Explorer 9, websites can take advantage of the power of modern hardware and a modern operating system and deliver experiences that were not possible a year ago. Internet Explorer 10 will push the boundaries of what developers can do on the Web even further.”

Taking Advantage of Modern Hardware With HTML5

Consumers and developers face an important technology challenge today: With the majority of consumers using multiple devices, the performance and rich experience of native applications demand the time and investment of re-writing applications from device to device. As a result, technology standards such as HTML5, which deliver superior performance through Web-connected devices, play an increasingly important role. This dynamic creates a clear catalyst for developers to gravitate toward technologies that not only comply with standards, but also exploit the power of the local device to offer rich, immersive, next-generation Web experiences.

Internet Explorer 9 is the only browser with hardware-accelerated HTML5 spanning all graphics, text, audio and video. It was the first browser to introduce innovations, such as hardware acceleration, built on deep HTML5 support, to enable fast and immersive Web experiences. The first platform preview of Internet Explorer 10 builds on these innovations and includes support for additional standards, such as CSS3 Gradients on background images and CSS3 Flexible Box Layout.

Developers can download the Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview at http://www.IETestDrive.com and provide direct feedback through new code refreshes approximately every 12 weeks.

Internet Explorer is designed to bring sites to the forefront, enabling a more immersive, more beautiful Web experience. At MIX11, Microsoft demoed sites and applications from many leading companies, including foursquare, Namco, Last.fm Ltd. and Sparkart Group Inc.’s new site for Bon Jovi, to demonstrate how companies are using Internet Explorer to create richer experiences.

“We love foursquare playground because it combines our API with interesting new technologies like HTML5 and Internet Explorer 9 to extend foursquare to the desktop and deliver beautiful visualizations of where users are gathering,” said Holger Luedorf, vice president of Mobile and Partnerships for foursquare. “We are excited to unveil new features in the experience, including an ‘add venue’ function and photo sharing.”

Increasing Interoperability With Standards and the Cloud

Microsoft is leading the adoption of Web standards with its long-term commitment to the HTML5 standards process and platform investments spanning Internet Explorer, Windows Phone and Windows 7. Hachamovitch highlighted projects from the Microsoft HTML5 Labs site (http://www.html5labs.com), where the company provides prototypes of early specifications from standards bodies, such as the W3C.

Microsoft also is focusing on standards and cloud development, helping developers more easily scale their apps to multiple devices and platforms. In his keynote, Scott Guthrie, corporate vice president, .NET Developer Platform, discussed how the Windows Azure platform empowers developers to use their existing skills to build, host and scale Web applications in the cloud.

Microsoft announced the commercial availability of new Windows Azure capabilities, including services that accelerate application performance and enable secure and open access to Web applications through popular identity providers, including Microsoft, Facebook and Google. A new community technology preview of traffic management capability for Windows Azure is also available today, enabling developers to more easily balance application performance across multiple geographies. Guthrie also announced a preview of Windows Azure content delivery network for media-streaming capabilities, available at the end of June. In addition to its commitment to HTML5, Web standards and cloud interoperability, Microsoft discussed its commitment to sponsoring open source projects, such as the Orchard project, a free CMS project in the Outercurve Foundation’s ASP.NET Open Source Gallery. Orchard 1.1 is available today, along with new Amazon.com Inc., UserVoice Inc. and DISQUS modules that contribute to the growing number of community-authored extensions for Orchard. Microsoft also announced an ASP.NET MVC 3 Tools Update, which enables Web developers to innovate quickly and easily via new HTML 5 markup support, Entity Framework 4.1 with Entity Code First now built in for easier database Web solution development, and expanded NuGet capabilities for finding and installing community components.

Today's keynote put a devices spotlight on Windows Phone, the forthcoming Kinect for Windows Beta SDK and the availability of Microsoft Silverlight 5 beta.

LAS VEGAS — April 13, 2011 — Microsoft Corp. executives today showcased the next version of the Windows Phone operating system and other powerful next-generation applications that span phones, PCs and other devices. Building on Tuesday's keynote, Microsoft demonstrated the value of developing for HTML5 and the standards-based Web with Internet Explorer 9 on PCs running Windows and Internet Explorer 9 on Windows Phone. With the forthcoming release of Windows Phone, coming later this year, Microsoft is providing developers with more hardware capabilities, better browsing and improved tooling, as well as expanded opportunities and Windows Phone Marketplace options. Together, these technologies create a richer application environment that expands mobile usage scenarios.

"The next release of Windows Phone represents the evolution of our strategy for ensuring that developers are at the forefront of 'what's next' by investing in even richer customer experiences, a powerful application platform and a thriving ecosystem," said Joe Belfiore, corporate vice president, Windows Phone Program Management. "We will soon deliver a new set of Windows Phone Developer Tools that will enable developers to create a new generation of apps that are even faster, more capable and better integrated with Windows Phone."

New Opportunities and Capabilities for Windows Phone

Today, Microsoft provided the first deep look at the development platform for the next version of Windows Phone, arriving on new and existing handsets later this year. Developers will soon have updated Windows Phone Developer Tools. Improved tools include a performance profiler and sensor simulation, enabling developers to build more integrated and high-performing applications. The new application platform enables developers to take advantage of the following:

Application multitasking for background processing, audio and file transfer, and fast application switching
Deeper phone integration so apps can, for example, take better advantage of the versatility of Live Tiles
Access to the camera and Motion Sensor library so developers can build apps that incorporate device hardware and build augmented reality experiences

Developers will be able to take advantage of these new capabilities to create even more creative and engaging Windows Phone apps and games.

The free Windows Phone Developer Tools for the new Windows Phone OS will be available to developers in May. With 38,000 registered developers, more than 13,000 available apps and 1.5 million downloads of the original Windows Phone Developer Tools, developers are the foundation of the fast-growing Windows Phone ecosystem.

Today, Microsoft also provided an early glimpse of app concepts for the next version of Windows Phone OS with new experiences from Skype, Spotify, Layar, Qantas and Amazon Shopping.

"Windows Phone is an incredibly fun and easy platform for developers to work with, and Kik was thrilled to have the chance to create a concept with the phone's next-generation developer tools," said Ted Livingston, CEO, Kik Messenger. "In only two weeks, we had an amazing new app that looks and feels like an extension of the phone itself, creating a customer experience like nothing we've seen before."

Kinect for Windows Beta SDK Opens Doors for Enthusiasts and Academics

Kinect for Xbox 360, recently recognized by Guinness World Records as the fastest-selling consumer device in 60 days, allows users to enjoy games and entertainment with their whole body and voice — no controller required. Since Kinect launched in November 2010, enthusiasts have been exploring the potential of Kinect in a number of unexpected, nongaming scenarios. Today at MIX, Microsoft detailed some of the features in the Kinect for Windows Beta SDK from Microsoft Research coming in the spring, including the following:

Robust Skeletal Tracking for high-performance capabilities that track the skeleton image of one or two persons moving within the Kinect field of view
Advanced Audio Capabilities, including four-element microphone array with sophisticated acoustic noise and echo cancellation for great audio; beam formation to identify the current sound source and integration with the Windows speech recognition API also included
XYZ depth camera for standard color camera stream access and depth data that indicates the distance of the object from the Kinect camera

Developers can sign up to be notified of the release at http://research.microsoft.com/kinectsdk.

Onstage, Microsoft showcased compelling examples of what is possible using the SDK, including WorldWide Telescope and several community projects. Frog design inc. created a Kinect-powered "Wall Panic" PC game, in which players contort their bodies until they match a shape descending on a large screen. This work typifies the creative groundswell of Kinect usage scenarios being delivered by enthusiasts, developers and academics.

"Microsoft's support for Kinect beyond the Xbox platform will increase opportunities for developers to explore new ideas and deliver innovative Kinect applications and experiences. A richer Kinect for Windows API will enable the creativity of these development communities to really come to life," said Robert Tuttle, chief architect, frog design.

Microsoft Silverlight 5 Beta Delivered

Microsoft also announced the immediate availability of the beta for Microsoft Silverlight 5, which provides advances in rich media and application development. New capabilities include Hardware Video Decode, for enhanced video quality and performance, and "Trickplay," which provides variable-rate video playback with audio pitch correction. The Microsoft Silverlight 5 beta also offers a new Microsoft XNA-based interface for delivering stunning 3-D visualizations within applications, along with a host of new features that are designed to enhance developer productivity and end-user experiences. At MIX, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels demonstrated a dynamic new site that uses HTML5 to make the site's core content engaging and wide-reaching while using Silverlight for streaming a never-before-seen, HD video experience from inside the cockpit and a high-performance, interactive, 3-D representation of a Blue Angels aircraft.

"The Blue Angels are excited to launch a new, state-of-the-art website that will allow us to more effectively accomplish our mission of enhancing Navy recruiting and credibly representing Navy and Marine Corps aviation to the United States and its Armed Forces," said Lt. Katie Kelly, U.S. Navy Blue Angels.

Last week at MIX11 we announced the next update coming to Windows Phone 7. Joe Belfiore, overseeing Windows Phone Program Management talked about the current state of the phone (more than 12000 apps in the marketplace) and then switching to what’s next. The “Mango” update is coming to developers next month but you can start getting up to date with the latest capabilities by watching or downloading the sessions covering the new APIs and capabilities given during MIX11.

The main announcements

Internet Explorer 9 coming to Windows Phone – with the same code base and features as the desktop with some minor differences specific to the phone (no Activex support for example). This brings HTML5 rendering engine to the phone. It includes hardware acceleration, although taking into account smaller GPU.
Multi-tasking and Live Agents: real time interactions via Live Tiles, Push Notifications, Deep Linking and Background Agents.

It will go further on the future of the Web, HTML5 and more to be previewed. For now: recommend that they do not miss this event! It will sell out really fast, once registrations are open DPE will send out an internal mail. Audience: technical dev leads, developers, IT managers and architects. Hot question: positioning Silverlight vs HTML5 A question that has been around since PDC 2010: is Silverlight dead, and being replaced by HTML5. At MIX this was a recurring question and we keep hearing it. Silverlight is not dead. Silverlight 5 beta has just come out and we still have a team working on it. So what has changed? While a few years ago our bet was Silverlight for cross-platform, cross-device, the world has changed and Microsoft's strategy has evolved with the world. To say that Silverlight is coming to any device (as in fridges and televisions) is wrong. The way of the industry here is clearly HTML5. And that is why Microsoft is investing a lot in supporting standards and HMTL5. Silverlight is a very viable solution for: Business enterprise apps Media and streaming, DRM HTML5 and Silverlight are a perfect match. On May 24th Microsoft held a press conference announcing many of the new features coming to the next version Windows Phone 7. Codename for this version is “Mango” so we’ll refer to it by that name in the rest of this post. Note that the official name in the documentation is Windows Phone 7.1 beta.

Mango was first unveiled at WMC event in Barcelona in February, more features including the full developer SDK functionalities were also shown during MIX conference in April. Take a look at the video below where Joe Belfiore walks you through the new consumer features.

Developers: download the SDK and take advantage of new features

Developers can tap into more than 1500 new APIs in Mango and start taking advantage of the new features today. But what are the main new features? Too many to call out in this post but focusing on the top we get:

Background processing
Phone access: calendar and contacts, camera access, additional sensors
HTML5 support with Internet Explorer 9 on the phone
Support for Silverlight + XNA together
Silverlight 4
Live Tile enhancements such as multiple tiles, deep linking, updating Live Tiles locally, use back of tiles
Fast application switching
Local SQL database
Sockets
Tooling: new code profiler and emulator

How to get started with Windows Phone 7.1 (Mango) Beta tools

1 – Download the tools

Download and install the updated SDK containing Visual Studio 2010, phone emulator and Expression Blend for Windows phone, including some tools like the .XAP deployment tool.
Note: for current application development: the new updated tools allow you for multi-targeting. This means v1 projects can be worked on with the updated tools, as well as creating new applications targeting the Windows Phone 7.1 version. Running the two tools versions side by side is not possible, and in this way not required really.

2 – Get yourself up to speed on the new developer features

3 – Register for the Marketplace

Today as a developer you can only submit applications for Windows Phone 7 (not Mango). In the near future the application marketplace for Mango will become available and from that point on you will be able to submit your “Mango” targeted application.
